In terms of population, Bratislava is one of the smaller capitals of Europe. The economy of the region accounts for about a quarter of the national GDP, despite only being home to 12% of the country’s population. The tertiary sector provides 80% of jobs; and the city has been much more successful in retaining its population than much of the Central and Eastern European region. From 2014 until 2018 the unemployment rate decreased from 5.7 % to 2.6%. Similarly, the numbers of students in higher education seem to be decreasing from 65,000 in 2014 to 49,500 in 2018.
